PSV "steals" the Dutch league

PSV "steals" the Dutch league

Ajax, which a month ago held a nine-point lead with four games remaining in the season, lost the Dutch league title, which PSV Eindhoven won yesterday after beating Sparta Rotterdam 3-1 and winning six games in a row.

The Amsterdam team, which beat Twente 2-0 yesterday, entered a period of crisis that cost them the title. They only managed one of the last nine points at stake. Match after match, their lead dwindled until last weekend, after a draw against Groningen, they lost the lead.

Ajax consecutively lost to Utrecht, drew with Sparta, and lost again to Nijmegen. Then came a 2-2 draw with Groningen, which knocked them off first place. During that time, PSV won six consecutive matches and managed to come back.

There were no surprises or miracles in the final matchday. PSV relied on themselves and didn't slip up, while Ajax finally won again, but it was too late.

Ajax will have to settle for returning to the Champions League.— EFE
